Fire At Myanmar Embassy In Thailand

A fire seriously damaged the top floor of the Myanmar embassy in neighbouring Thailand on Monday ( 26 May 08 ) but there were no injuries, Thai fire department and police officials said.

They said the fire, which occured after sunrise, was brought under control within 30 minutes but that there was a significant amount of smoke.

An investigation is under way at the embassy, which is on a main throughfare in the Thai capital Bangkok.

"The blaze broke out on the top floor, in a room full of documents and filing cabinets," said firefighter Niwat Jootawong. "That floor is basically burnt down. There's also a little damage on the ground floor." Visa section may be included and there is bound to be a break in issuing Myanmar visas.

The fire occurred one day after an international conference on cyclone relief in Myanmar, dealing with aid to cyclone victims with at least 133,000 dead or missing presumed dead.

Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar on 2 and 3 May 2008 with winds up to 200 kph, sweeping through the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) delta region and the country’s main city and former capital, Yangon (Rangoon). Damage was most severe in the delta region, where the effects of extreme winds were compounded by a sizable storm surge that destroyed an estimated 95% of housing.

Curfew hours relaxed
